How To Make A Ouija Board

If you are fascinated or intrigued by the spirit world, mystical powers, paranormal occurrences, séances and finding ways to communicate with the afterlife, then a Ouija board may be just the tool for you. The Ouija board, which is also referred to as a spirit board, was created back in the late 1800′s and was originally intended as a simple parlor game with no association to the supernatural. Over the years the Ouija board has become a well-known game that people use to try to make a connection with spirits from another world.

Some people will swear that the Ouija board actually works. The planchette or pointer mysteriously moves from one letter to another spelling out messages. Many believe that the swift movements of the pointer are actually being controlled by supernatural forces trying to communicate with you. Others will say that the pointer is unconsciously being moved by the participants of the game, not because they are possessed or are being controlled by spirits or even experiencing a paranormal event, but because of something called the ideomotor effect. The ideomotor effect is a psychological occurrence where someone can move unconsciously with their body (or hands in the case of the Ouija board) reacting automatically to specific thoughts in the mind.

No matter what one believes or their reasons for wanting to use an Ouija board, the Ouija board is a simple design that can easily be reproduced if you don’t have an actual board. Ouija boards may vary in size or design depending on where they came from but the general characteristics of the board are typically the same for any Ouija board. The Ouija board by Parker Brothers is probably the most common and well known design of the Ouija board.

How to Make a Homemade Ouija Board

How To Make A Ouija BoardA Ouija board can be made at home in a few simple steps. The dimensions of a Ouija board can really be any size you would like but it should have ample room to place 26 letters of the alphabet, 10 numbers, and the 3 words, yes, no and good bye. A standard size is approximately 18″ x 12″ (45cm x 30cm). Depending on how involved you want to get with the design of your Ouija board you will need some basic tools to get started such as wood, heavy cardboard or poster board, stencils, black paint or permanent marker, and a glass or coin.

1) Step one is to create the board. A thin piece of wood or fiber board is needed and should be cut to the appropriate size (recommended 18″ x 12″). It must have a smooth surface so that the planchette (pointer) can easily move across the board. If you don’t have a piece of wood or the ability to cut the wood a heavy piece of cardboard or even poster board will suffice.

2) Letter and number placement: You can use stencils of upper case letters A though Z and numbers 0 through 9. If you don’t have stencils available you can simply write the letters freehand. It is recommended that you lay out the placement of your letters on the board with a pencil to ensure you have enough room for all the letters and numbers. Both letters and numbers need to have enough spacing between each other to easily distinguish one from another when the planchette moves to it. There is no right or wrong way to design your Ouija board. The letters can be placed in two rows (Row 1 – A through M; Row 2 – N through Z) with both rows in an arch or elongated half circle (Row 2 centered directly under Row 1). The numbers 0 through 9 can be placed in a straight line (the “0″ can be used before the 1 or after the 9) and centered directly under the second row of letters.

3) Once you have laid out the placement of the letters and numbers, use a stencil or freehand to actually put them on your board using black paint or black permanent marker.

4) Word placement: Three words are traditionally used on the Ouija board. “YES” in the upper left corner, “NO” in the upper right corner, and “GOOD BYE” centered at the bottom of the board. This is a common placement for these words but you can actually put them wherever you like. The words “MAYBE” and “HELLO” are also sometimes used.

5) The final step is to create your planchette or pointer to play the game. It is typically a small heart shaped piece of wood with a felt base so that it can easily slide across the board. You can actually purchase a planchette on line to use with your board or literally any small object will do. A coin or a shot glass are common items to use. You just need to be able to place your fingers over the object with unguided pressure to play the game.

You can get creative and add your own designs or symbols to the board if desired and you’re done. Now you have a homemade Ouija board to use with your friends on a Friday night to contact a spirit or two.

  1. My sole word of caution, homemade or otherwise… is never ever use it on your own. Despite your strength, you could end up overwhelmed. This is as real as you’re open to…be very careful…
